Nordwand Movie review

Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser his Nazi Germany's new hope in a race who first reached the top of the notorious North Face. An ominous thrilling ascent to fame and recognition.

Toni and Andi are soldiers of the Bavarian mountain brigade. They have put together a well-oiled machine when it comes to beklauteren of dangerous cliffs. All they have defied except the northern wall of the Eiger in Switzerland no one can tame has. The Nordwand is notorious for its treacherous rocks, ice walls and sudden changes of weather. Several climbers died on the mountain. Andi its decision already taken. He wants to climb the Nordwand. Away from the latrines and toilets shine on the army base. Toni is less enthusiastic. "He has a little 'Schiß'" Andi says jokingly. But if Luise Fellner, photographer of the Berliner Zeitung and former girlfriend Toni, comes looking for them, they know to penetrate at Toni. He changes his mind. And the battle is on to the top.

Mythical
The Nordwand is not just a mountain; He is known as the only one who has never tamed. In the hotel where Luise and her boss Henry Arau stay, the pictures hang on the first fallen mountaineers, Max Sedlmayer and Karl Mehringer. It emphasizes once again that the Nordwand is a merciless beast. An ogre (corruption of Eiger) which devours everyone who gets too close. The villagers, who call the mountain Mordwand, make sarcastic remarks as the climbers arrive in good spirits. "They go home in a coffin," said one of them. The unexpected adverse change in the weather for Toni the only reason not to go. A sunny day can turn with a snap of the fingers in a dark bleak blizzard with piercing wind gusts. So is reminded constantly of the terrible dangers of the mountain. Frozen limbs, thundering avalanches and chillingly sharp rocks; horrible hardships, where the climbers are exposed to. Director Philip Stölzl creates refined manner a mythical atmosphere around this mountain.

Power switch
Henry, an arrogant, egocentric journalist, only hunting for sensation. From the balcony of the hotel, he looks with a telephoto lens to the operations of Toni and Andi. He has a nose for news, "he says. Luise, green as grass, looks very much against her colleague. A very admirable talent, but also very cold and numb. His proposal to Luise but for something to drink, because the cloud obstructs their view of the climbers, Luise also raises concern about Henry's motives. Because that he degrades the heroic ascent to an ordinary TV program that you at any time and can put off. And when the ascent is likely to end up in an anti-climax Henry grabs his bags. According to him, he and Luise there to defeat a great victory or just a horrible tragedy. And everything in between is not a story on the front page. All these events feed Luise's aversion to cold, chilly sensation and horny world of Henry. In this way the writers have given depth to the character of Luise and thus the story given more body.

Propaganda
The national media proliferates on top, as they discover Toni and Andi in an article in the local newspaper in Berchtesgaden. Henry Berliner Zeitung designates them as the new heroes of Nazi Germany. Taming the Nordwand by two on top and Germans would be the perfect publicity stunt ahead of the Summer Olympics in Berlin from 1936. In addition, it would also be a symbolic victory on "the last problem Austria. The main rivals in the race to the top are: the Austrians Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer. Also in the hotel is that rivalry up. Where Henry clear preference in favor of the Germans, says his Austrian dinner guest, Herr Landauer, his sympathy for the Austrians. At one point strikes the healthy rivalry even into subcutaneous hostility as to whether the Austrian table guest does belong to the Aryan race, as is discussed. So you immediately notice the context in which you have to see the story. And that is absolutely necessary to understand how much pressure is on the shoulders of the climbers rest. They should lead the Nazi Germany to new heights.

Genre
Nordwand is an extremely impressive drama and adventure film, also based on a true story. But in addition, it is also a love story. That is perhaps the pitfall in this film. You feel that the adventure film and the love story also are engaged in a race to the top. The entire film is of course dominated by curbing the Nordwand. But gradually looms a love story, which at the mountain trying to boxing. Henry tries ostentation and flattering remarks to flirt with Luise. But the beautiful piano playing and the smooth talking have no effect. She still has feelings for Toni. If he brings his notes booklet Luise's hotel room, she gives him a passionate kiss goodbye. This lovemaking becomes fiercer and fiercer towards the end. And that's a shame. The love story had more expected to in the second plan. Despite making the spectacular images of the ascent; the vistas, extreme heights and breathtaking situations lot. The excellent camera work still makes it a top adventure movie. In addition, the performances are very good. Especially Ulrich Tukur (The Lives of Others), who plays Henry Arau, puts his character perfectly insufferable journalist down.

Conclusion
If you think that climbing a mountain can not lead to a good movie, you're wrong. The context in which the film and the mythical atmosphere, which is built for climbing the mountain, are the ingredients for a very intriguing film with good performances. And despite the love content film which is in the way, director Philip Stölzl put down something memorabels.
